We invite you to take this opportunity to hear James provide an update on the latest activity and ramifications of the 2017 legislative session. 

James is the head of the State and Local Tax (SALT) department for REDW. With approximately 11 years of experience specializing exclusively in the State and Local Tax arena, both in a public accounting role and as a SALT specialist for an international clothing retailer, James has dealt with sales and use tax compliance for every state in the U.S.A. and Canada. James spent nearly four years working at the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department in a variety of roles, including serving as an auditor in the Audit and Compliance Division, as well as developing internal department procedures for auditing specialty refund claims.


James is an active member with Mesilla Valley Economic Development. He is an Enterprise Advisor for the Arrowhead Center at New Mexico State University and a board member of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) Albuquerque chapter.


James has extensive experience with a wide range of industries and tax specialties. They include, but are not limited to, the following:

April 2017- Economic Update- Gary Tonjes

Albuquerque Institute of Management Accountants is proud to host Gary Tonjes, for our April Meeting!

April 19th, 5:30 PM at REDW.

This is an excellent opportunity to hear Gary gives us an update on the latest activity, wins and outlook for the Greater Albuquerque market. 

 

Gary Tonjes, President of Albuquerque Economic Development, Inc. (AED), was raised in Albuquerque and graduated from Eastern New Mexico University.

 

Gary worked for the Roswell Chamber of Commerce (1979-81), the Odessa, Texas Chamber (1981-84), and was President of the Joplin Missouri Area Chamber of Commerce for ten years. He joined AED in 1994. 

 

AED is a non-profit corporation funded principally by leading members of the business community. AED assists existing industry and has served as the lead organization for the recruitment of more than 300 new companies to the metropolitan area, including Facebook's new data center in Los Lunas.

 

Gary received The Site Selectors Guild President’s Award for Excellence in Economic Development in 2013, the New Mexico Ethics in Business Award for Individual Excellence in 2014, and the Industrial Asset Management Council’s Mary Jo Hanover Award in 2015. In 2017, he was recognized as one of North America’s Top 50 Economic Developers by Consultant Connect.

Beth A. Mohr joined McHard Accounting Consulting LLC in 2010, and became managing partner in January 2011.  She is a Certified Fraud Examiner, a certification bestowed upon testing by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE).  She was also awarded the Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist credential by the Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists (ACAMS).  She was among the first Certified Cyber Crimes Investigator, a credential awarded by the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators (IAFCI).  Beth has over thirty years of experience investigating financial and white collar crimes, in addition to her experience investigating death penalty mitigation cases, civil rights cases, and other complex criminal and civil investigations.  She has testified as an expert witness in three states on a variety of matters.  Beth is retired from the San Diego Police Department, where she was a highly decorated officer.  Beth is a private investigator licensed by the States of New Mexico, Arizona and California.  She holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of New Mexico.  She was appointed to the City of Albuquerque’s Police Oversight Board in 2015, the body responsible for Civilian Oversight in the wake of a Department of Justice Consent Decree against the Albuquerque Police Department, and has been Chair for the past year. Learn more about Beth and McHard Consulting

Dr. Ellis holds degrees in accounting and finance as well as a current CPA license from the State of California. During her doctoral studies she focused on accounting ethics and presented her dissertation for her doctorate with a focus on a study emphasizing accounting ethics. Dr. Ellis has been an accounting professor for over fifteen years. Today, she is a full-time professor at National University in LaJolla, California. In addition to her professor responsibilities, she has been an advocate for her students becoming a CPA and entering the accounting profession. She is a new resident in Albuquerque. 

Subject:    “ACCOUNTING ETHICS” PRESENTATION

The presentation studies the fundamentals of accounting ethics focusing on case analysis and discussion with identification of possible solutions in acquisition of good ethical judgements. The objective of the presentation is to increase ethical sensitivity with focusing on learning outcomes including: analysis of facts presented in a case scenario, evaluation of possible solutions to case dilemmas, support evaluations through presentation and debate, and demonstration through analysis and discussion specific ethical issues involved in the field of accounting. Cases will be supplied to participants for analysis during the presentation.  Required tools for this presentation include pen or pencil and a writing tablet.

Speaker : Tim Tribe, CPA/CFF, CFE, CICA

Tim has been a practicing accountant for more than 17 years, spending more than half that time in forensics, examining allegations of fraud, analyzing accounting records, and assessing economic damages for matters involving litigation. He has provided litigation support in both criminal and civil proceedings, analyzing related financial information and developing expert testimony and materials on such topics as fraud patterns, sufficiency of accounting evidence, analysis of internal control, accountants' standard of care, economic damages, business interruption claims, and lost profits analyses. Tim has issued written opinions in over 40 cases and testified in arbitration, deposition and trial. He has also taught financial and forensic accounting, fraud examination, and auditing principles at the college level.

Subject: Workplace Fraud

This course serves as an introduction to employee theft schemes commonly encountered in the workplace. 

Discussion will include a brief outline of the rates of occurrence of various general types of employee theft, introduction to specific common schemes, and training on the recognition of red flags for each scheme.

On May 28, 2014, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) issued Accounting Standards Update (ASU) 2014-09, Revenue from Contracts with Customers. The standard will eliminate the transaction- and industry-specific revenue recognition guidance under current U.S. GAAP and replace it with a principle based approach for determining revenue recognition. Mr. Tonjes will be talking about the growing Albuquerque economy, what the city's plans are to grow our economy, and how. He will discuss trends and upcoming events that will have economic impact to the greater Albuquerque are.
